Radioisotopes for medicine

Radionuclide diagnosis, due to its high efficiency, became an indispensable part of clinical practice in developed countries. The use of radiopharmaceuticals allows diagnosis of various diseases in the early stages. To solve this problem and overcome the dependence on imports the Institute of Nuclear Physics has been developing technologies over the past few years for the production of critical medical isotopes and radiopharmaceuticals.

Today, the Scientific and Technical Center of Radiochemistry and the Production of Isotopes of the Institute of Nuclear Physics regularly produces and supplies to Republic’s medical facilities the following radiopharmaceuticals:

Sodium Pertechnate ⁹⁹ᵐTc, solution for injections

Sodium Pertechnate ⁹⁹ᵐTc is used to study the functional state of the anatomical, topographical and structural changes in the thyroid and salivary glands, gastric mucosa, brain and bone marrow, lymph nodes, visualization of the heart cavities and major blood vessels.

In the form of complexes with different sets of reagents, sodium pertechnate ⁹⁹ᵐTc is used to diagnose diseases of almost all organs and systems of the human body.

Diagnostic reagent kits for labeling ⁹⁹ᵐTc are being prepared for production and are currently being tested:

ДТПА – ⁹⁹ᵐTc for scintigraphy to diagnose various diseases of the kidneys and urinary tract (glomerulonephritis, pyelonephritis, urolithiasis), determining the glomerular filtration rate
MDF – ⁹⁹ᵐTc for scintigraphy and scanning of the skeleton to diagnose lesions of various etiologies: primary and metastatic malignant tumors, osteomyelitis, bone and joint tuberculosis, arthritis of various origins
Phytate – ⁹⁹ᵐTc for scintigraphy and scanning of both liver and spleen to determine the size and violations of anatomical and morphological structure of tumors, cirrhosis, hepatitis and other diseases, as well as for bone marrow scintigraphy in various pathologies of the hematopoietic system.

Sodium iodide 131I, solution

Sodium iodide 131I is used to study the functional state of the thyroid gland, to define the anatomical structure and shape (area location, availability and features of aberrant tissue), to identify structural changes in glands.

Sodium o-Iodohippurate 131I, solution for injections

Sodium o-Iodohippurate 131I is used in radionuclide renography for the study of renal excretory function, urodynamics, in a static scintigraphy – to study the anatomical, topographical features and functional structure of the renal parenchyma, in a dynamic scintigraphy – for the study of renal excretory function.

Thallium chloride 201T1, solution for injections

Thallium chloride 201T1 is involved in metabolism similar to potassium chloride and is used for myocardial perfusion imaging. Thallium chloride accumulates in the myocardium and reflects the blood circulation. The ability to carry out research in rest, and be able to load to distinguish ischemia, depending on the load, and defects that do not depend on the load, such as scarring of the transferred heart attack, etc.

Gallium Citrate 67Ga, solution for injections

Gallium Citrate 67Ga has a unique feature – to accumulate in malignant neoplasms in a larger amount than in healthy tissue, and is used for diagnosis of malignant neoplasms of the gastrointestinal tract, inflammatory bone and joint diseases, pulmonary infections, especially in immunocompromised patients.
